Our take

Second-generation materials are those that have previously had a life within an object, but are recycled to be used as a less complex material in new products and objects. Carbon fiber composites, for instance, are used in renewable energy hardware and aircrafts - and once these parts reach the end of their lifespan, Fairmat converts them into new materials through its recycling process.

Fairmate Quest, as the recycled composite is called, is ten times cheaper than first-gen carbon composites, as well as being twice as light as aluminium. This means that the recycling system not only puts less of a strain on the environment, but has many benefits for both sellers and buyers.

With this in mind, its no surprise that since its founding, Fairmat has signed contracts with companies that amount to more than 35% of the carbon fiber composite waste in Europe. Funding will be used to increase its processing plant’s sorting capacity, with it currently on-target to have 3500 tons of scrap carbon composite sorted a year by its robot fleet.
