Who you are

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering, or foreign degree equivalent, plus 2 years of experience as an Engineer, intern or co-op in one of the following engineering fields: Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, Product Operations Manufacturing, Robotics, or Automation Engineering
Experience must include designing and prototyping mechanical and electrical systems; electronics for industrial automation (PLCs, motor drive, industrial machinery, functional safety modules, sensors, actuators, etc.); mechanical design (SolidWorks or equivalent) and rapid prototyping (3D printing, laser cutting, machine shop skills); debugging and lab test instruments (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies); fundamental controls concepts (PID, deadband, bode plots, etc.)
Basic Embedded programming utilizing C/C++ and Python; product lifecycle management tools, such as Jira, Arena or equivalent; create assembly instructions, process documentation, preventive maintenance and control plans; and FMEA analysis to identify possible modes of failure

What the job involves

Design and prototype simple, scalable and robust electro-mechanical systems, including mechatronic assemblies for the entire robot stack, such as motors, power electronics, motor controllers, pneumatics, physical sensing using SolidWorks, KiCAD, FEA, and AutoCAD
Design power and control panels with PLC integration, functional safety modules, and industrial machinery while adhering to standards like IPC, FCC, UL, and CE
Test mechatronic solutions to quantify system performance and troubleshoot bugs utilizing lab test instruments (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, function generators, logic analyzers etc.)
Measure, log and debug system health and performance using embedded C/C++ and Python
Write and maintain design documentation and BOM, that clearly communicates device design, capabilities, and manufacturing / assembly / test / installation / maintenance procedures
Perform FMEA analysis to identify possible modes of failure during design, manufacturing, deployment and maintenance; and utilize product lifecycle management tools, such as Jira and Arena

Our take

Dexterity emerged from stealth at an opportune, albeit tough, time in 2020, just as an accelerating labour crunch drove major demand for automated solutions in factories and warehouses. The company managed a major fundraise and immediately moved on to bigger and better things: expanding into the Japanese market, partnering with supply chain automation leader Dematic and achieving unicorn status with a greater than $1 billion valuation.

Unlike other companies which are fixated on developing increasingly sophisticated, more human-like robots, Dexterity’s takes a comparatively simple hardware approach. Its machines take care of highly repetitive tasks, while its SaaS platform shares everything it learns with each robot, amplifying intelligence across the fleet. Rather than seeking to replace human workforces it aims to augment them, freeing skilled workers for more complex tasks.

Considering that the worldwide labour shortage is heavily impacting the industrial sector, Dexterity is in a promising position to continue its upward trajectory over the next few years.. Indeed its recent partnerships with Sumitomo to supply 1,500 Dexterity robots in their warehouses and with FedEx for autonomous trailer loading are encouraging signs of things to come for the company.
