Who you are
- BS/MS or equivalent in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field or equivalent practical experience
- 5+ years of software engineering/production infrastructure industry experience
- Experience with Python and Go
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), distributed systems, and databases such as PostgreSQL or DynamoDB
- Proficient and effective in using AI tools (e.g. Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor) to accelerate coding and engineering workflows
- Proficiency in object-oriented programming
- Experience working with data structures or algorithms
- Ability to work with a low-ego, highly collaborative, and cross-functional team
- Bonus points: Experience with LLM orchestration (LangChain, etc.), Vector Databases, or building APIs for conversational agents

As an engineer at Lyft, you'll collaborate with teams like product, data science, analytics, and operations on code that empower us to iterate quickly, while focusing on delighting our passengers and drivers
- The Applied AI team is looking for a Backend Engineer to join the AI Entries team
- You will build the foundational infrastructure that connects Lyft to emerging AI ecosystems and devices and architect the APIs and orchestration layers that allow third-party agents and multimodal interfaces to interact with Lyft. By building these robust integration, you will help make Lyft available where our riders are
- Establish engineering best practices and patterns; help uplift the team's craft and drive a culture of engineering excellence
- Drive high-impact projects and innovate new solutions to deliver the best user experience
- Produce and drive scalable system design for large, complex features — from idea through execution and launch
- Mentor engineers on the team, providing technical guidance and supporting their growth
- Write well-crafted, well-tested, readable, maintainable code
- Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality and share knowledge across the team
- Participate in the team's on-call rotation; identify, triage, debug, and resolve issues across our applications and platforms
- Have the ability to explain the various trade offs made in decisions
- Manage project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables
Our take
Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.
Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.
In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialled and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app, whilst the acquisition of European competitor Freenow could add 6 million new riders to its platform in 2026.
