Role
Who you are
- We need a Research Communications and Marketing Manager who is passionate about science and has a strong interest in working with our multidisciplinary community, to deliver creative and effective marketing campaigns to help deliver our communications strategy
- Educated to a degree level (preferably in a science subject) or equivalent work experience
- Relevant experience in delivering communications strategies and marketing campaigns through multiple channels with accountability for reporting
- Ability to produce relevant, engaging and inspiring copy and content
- Experience of using content management systems, email platforms and templates to create campaigns
- Demonstrable experience of using and reporting on web and social media analytics (eg Google Analytics)
- Experience of commissioning external agencies and freelancers, from writing briefs to overseeing the delivery of high-quality creative work, on time and in budget
- Experience working within a scientific/research-focused organisation (eg agency, academia, funder, publisher, professional body, pharmaceutical industry)

- Cancer Research UK are looking for an experienced Research Marketing Manager to join our Research information, communication and engagement team

- The Research Marketing and Communications team drive the reach, reputation and profile of Cancer Research UK’s research activities with the research community
- We use a bold and dynamic approach to how we communicate with our research community and industry partners
- With ever-increasing ambition in this area, this is a great opportunity for a confident and self-motivated Research Communications and Marketing Manager to join us
- You will manage a portfolio of branded communications and marketing activities that engage, inspire and inform researchers about our work
- You’ll work with audiences in academia and industry, in the UK and overseas
- Through your understanding of these audiences and your innovative approach, you will manage a range of communication channels and support the bespoke marketing and communication needs of researcher- and industry-facing teams in Cancer Research UK
- Work with our researcher-facing teams to plan and deliver targeted multi-channel marketing campaigns to support priority activities including announcements, events and funding schemes
- Gather insight from academic and industry research audiences to shape your communication and marketing activities
- Create high-quality, engaging content suitable for a range of channels, including email, digital, social and print. Ensure all activity is on brand and uses appropriate language for a research audience
- Maximise brand attribution of our major research investments and promote Cancer Research UK’s reach and reputation with researchers

The world’s largest independent cancer research charity, Cancer Research UK (CRUK) was founded from a merger between the Cancer Research Campaign and the Cancer Research Fund in 2002. CRC and ICRF had been longstanding pinnacles of the British medical institution, their work dating back to 1902 and 1923 respectively, and the merger signalled a strong step forward for UK medical institutes’ global influence.
A multi-armed charity, CRUK uses both grant-funded researchers and its own employed staff to research the treatments and causes of cancer, whilst its striking advertising and marketing campaigns are responsible for influencing public policy on the causes, prevention, and treatment of the disease. An example of a significant public campaign was Stoptober, which appeared to have triggered a third of a million smokers at the time to try quit tobacco throughout the month of October.
Alongside its pharmaceutical efforts, in 2023 CRUK funded clinical trials for the first-ever proton beam therapy for breast cancer, indicating a focus on technological innovations in the fight against cancer. On this subject, CRUK has also taken part in a billion-pound investment in the Francis Crick Institute, a biomedical research institute that is aiming to make England an international leader in the industry.
