Their mission is to eliminate the worst forms of poverty on a platform of clean energy and smartphone technology.
Around 2.6 billion people in the world do not have access to modern, clean energy. This restricts them to using open fire cookstoves which emit high levels of smoke, having massive negative knock-on effects. On a human level, the pollution such stoves produce is linked with over 4 million deaths a year. On an environmental level, 21% of global black carbon emissions come from this kind of residential fuel burning, mostly in the developing world, and the use of wood for fuel has caused massive deforestation.
African Clean Energy wants to change this. Their product - the ACE One Energy System - provides a smokeless cooking experience and generates solar electricity for its users, helping communities to transition to cleaner fuel alternatives. Paid for using long-term credit contracts, the system is designed to make green energy affordable for residents of developing countries, as well as cleaner and more efficient.
Operating in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, African Clean Energy's current focus is on boosting their key performance indicator - how much carbon have they offset - whilst maintaining real user impact.
