To empower patients with the freedom of SPEAX.
Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) can be a life-saving intervention for patients, but the mask means verbal communication is tough. This has been proven to substantially hike up patient anxiety and, subsequently, early treatment-discontinuation rates. With good reason, too: being able to communicate with your family or physician, especially in case of further medical incident, is vital - and the current standard practice of written notes or mime just doesn’t pass muster.
Ataia Medical has devised a long overdue solution. Its SPEAX product consists of a stick-on microphone that attaches to the patient’s NIV mask, which is then connected to a speaker system with adjustable volume control so that speech can be crisply and clearly understood.
It’s a neat solution, but it’s hard to tell how much success Ataia has had shipping it out to healthcare providers and customers. The company may need to pick up the pace of distribution: ReddyPort has developed a similar microphone communications product for precisely this same application, and whilst they seem to be similarly modest in spread, this could scupper Ataia’s lead.
