Our take

Conceived after the founders underwent the ‘Return to Vatnajokull’ ski expedition, Basecamp Research is a biological data company that is building BaseDiscovery, a platform using DNA analysis and environmental monitoring to discover protein products that will improve our understanding of the natural world.

Basecamp Research has entered the market at a time where technology is understood as key to shaping the way we respond to global problems like climate change. The company’s combination of exploration with data science and machine learning is a different approach previously seen in the biodiversity sector but is an exciting step towards more innovative solutions to this pressing global crisis.

This is a young startup but it has successfully achieved Series A funding and won Gold at the AWS awards. It has collected over 40 global samples from its expeditions so far and secures deals with indigenous people to share the royalties it receives from genome and data sales. This ethical business model will be sustained by Basecamp Research's investment, which will be used to fund more expeditions.
