Our take

Brilliant is an online resource for high-quality STEM educational resources, aimed at students worldwide. Founded in 2012, the company sources lessons from award-winning experts from the likes of MIT, Google, and Caltech. Its focus is on providing bite-sized, interactive exercises that encourage conceptual understanding and enjoyment in the learning process.

With a drive to engage more young learners in STEM education, Brilliant may be on the right side of history. U.S. students underperform in STEM in world rankings with close economic competitors, and so the appetite to engage students with the kind of services Brilliant offers is growing.

The company also offer intermediate and advanced level courses for more experienced professionals, with over 10 million users in 2021. Brilliant’s online, highly accessible solution may prove increasingly popular following the rapid shift to virtual learning triggered by the pandemic.

Company values

  • Excites - The greatest challenges to education are disinterest and apathy
  • Cultivates curiosity - Questions and storytelling that cultivate natural curiosity are better than the threat of a test
  • Is active - Effective learning is active, not passive. Watching a video is not enough
  • Is applicable - Use it or lose it: it is essential to apply what you're learning as you learn it
  • Is community driven - A community that challenges and inspires you is invaluable
  • Doesn't discriminate - Your age, country, and gender don't determine what you are capable of learning
  • Allows for failure - The best learners allow themselves to make many mistakes along their journey
  • Sparks questions - The culmination of a great education isn't knowing all the answers — it's knowing what to ask

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Brilliant

  • We run a consistent interview process, with consistent criteria and questions for similar roles
  • We work to reduce bias as much as possible – e.g., we don’t reveal personal details about the applicant to the engineering team when reviewing coding challenges; we make a point to have the interviewers be diverse for every candidate
  • We post our JDs to diverse hiring boards (e.g., ones comprised of women in STEM, and programmers from underrepresented groups)
  • We encourage all of our recruiters to send us diverse candidates, and candidates from non-traditional backgrounds
