Commercial vehicle renting & sharing
Jump to section
COOP’s mission is to make trucks easily shareable for everyone everywhere, affording fleet owners the opportunity to generate revenue from their idle vehicles and providing businesses with an alternative source of rental vehicles.
One quarter of the 12 million registered commercial vehicles in the US reportedly go unused for at least one day in the working week, leading to optimization issues for the country’s fleet owners. However, it has also lead to an interesting market opportunity for transportation and logistics giant Ryder, who in 2018 launched their peer-to-peer vehicle sharing platform COOP.
COOP neatly aligns companies looking to capitalize on idle vehicles with others looking to expand their fleet capacity, whilst riding the wave of innovation spurred on by the growing “sharing economy”. This has proven popular - since their Atlanta launch, the company has scaled fast to operate and provide insurance coverage across all 50 US states, and this should come as no surprise. Cycles of logistical shortfalls and excesses are common in transport, with varying seasonal demands creating issues for companies with fixed fleets that are neatly resolved through sharing schemes.
Offering fleet owners the ability to monetize idle vehicles has proven especially lucrative in recent years. The balance of vehicle demand has shifted in unprecedented ways, resulting in increased activity on COOP’s platform as owners move to adapt. COOP now services over 10,000 companies and is looking to add more and with supply chain disruptions persisting, COOP look set to successfully continue with its market domination.
