Our take

Everybody has a different food palate and dietary requirements, leading some people to envision an idealistic restaurant in which customers could get creative and order exactly what they wanted. However, facilitating this comes with significant challenges, with most boiling down to human chefs being limited to the number of ingredients, utensils, and dishes that they can manage in a kitchen.

Cala operates a pasta restaurant in Paris that allows customers to create their ideal dish from a list of ingredients, with advanced robotic chefs preparing each bespoke meal to order. The company saves significant funds in staffing through its robotic chefs, allowing it to reinvest these savings into purchasing the highest quality ingredients possible.

Several restaurant startups are claiming to host “the world's first robotic chefs”, but only Cala has taken the smart move to reinvest staffing savings into stocking expensive and high-quality ingredients. Furthermore, existing attempts at robotic restaurants generally still work with a fixed menu, whereas Cala recognizes the extent of individual diets, encouraging customers to order exactly what they want and need.
