The Center for Countering Digital Hate's mission is to strengthen communities and democracy by disrupting hate and dangerous misinformation.
The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) is an ambitious non-profit NGO looking to tackle the problem of hate speech and disinformation in the digital space. This remit covers a broad range of hot-button issues that have been exacerbated over recent years, and it has been winning them some attention.
The CCDH's approach to so tangled and broad a matter as digital hate is to focus on hyper-specific targeted campaigns. These are usually oriented towards removing particular ads or prominent figures (Georgia Galloway and Katie Hopkins, among others) from social media, or researching publishing pages they consider to be key perpetrators of spreading misinformation. If the currency of campaigns depends largely on exposure, the strategy of combining hot-button topics with high-profile cases is a smart approach - even if some may query the efficacy of bans as a means of combating digital hate.
The campaign group’s research has made it into articles by leading publications like The Guardian and NBC, so their efforts are gaining some traction. And with many recent events confirming their thesis that online discourse can substantially impact offline society, the CCDH is certainly moving in step with the times.
