Our take
In the modern world, we look to science to make the crucial breakthroughs we need. In issues ranging from the environment to our health, scientific ingenuity is paramount to our development as a species. But scientists often run into considerable hurdles. Proper equipment is often very expensive and hard to come by, and with the sector already suffering from minimal funding, many people with great ideas are crippled by their inability to get the equipment they need.
This is the problem that Clustermarket wants to solve. Clustermarket is an online booking tool for basic and scarce scientific equipment and services that connects laboratories at scientific institutions, such as UCL, with scientists, companies and organisations that wish to use the machines or outsource experiments. The platform pairs those who have with those who need, and therefore benefits both well-established institutions and early-stage companies in the scientific field.
Clustermarket’s emergence reflects a growing realisation of the need for better access to lab equipment. It is not a new idea, but Clustermarket has made great progress in harnessing the potential of the sharing economy for science. Furthermore, its model, which promotes collaboration with similar platforms and providers, is not alone in its mission. Given the need for its services and the amount of support it has already been able to drum up, there is huge potential for Clustermarket to really make an impact on the UK's scientific field.
