Our take

With customers ranging from PayPal to American Express, Codility promises to "hire more, interview less". It uses initial screening technology to help customers reduce large numbers of applicants to a small, manageable pipeline by testing coding skills directly relevant to the job.

Hiring good software engineers is a burning pain for most fast-growth companies in the world. The promise of cheaper, faster hiring is an attractive proposition. Their main competitor, Coderbyte, might offer more detailed reports and longer tests, but Codility understands what recruitment managers really want: to save time.

Their eventual aim is to entirely remove the human element from the pre-interview recruitment pipeline. This means full automation of the Codility platform, totally replacing CV and cover letter screening, with automatic test marking and grading. The company's most recent move was to introduce "AI-resistant" testing to combat the recent uptick in generative AI being used to cheat coding tests.
