Our take
Bulk payments in the UK have mostly only been available to medium to large scale businesses that have corporate banking accounts. As such, many SMEs have been forced to rely on legacy, inefficient payment processes causing significant issues when it comes to paying staff, suppliers and customers. In the U.K. alone, over £1 trillion per year is transferred manually by small businesses with less than 10 staff.
Comma’s system enables small and micro businesses to bulk-pay bills, salaries and taxes using existing high street small business bank accounts, saving them a lot of time and money in administration. Under an automated system that streamlines processes with the aid of open banking, small businesses are able to access key data sources and communicate with bank accounts in a much more efficient way.
The industry is starting to get increasingly crowded. In the UK, Comma competes to some extent with Credec, Telleroo and BACS bureaus such as ADP. Internationally, Melio in the US and Libeo in France are also offering something similar.
