Our take

The need for companionship has arguably never been higher. According to a 2018 study conducted by Age UK, the number of over-50s experiencing loneliness is set to reach two million by 2025/6, an increase of over half a million from 2016/17. This is the problem which companiions wants to help solve.

Founded during the height of the pandemic, companiions operates a mobile app that links those in need of support with carers and companions, making arranging help and assistance quick, easy and safe. In terms of a target audience, companiions is aimed at individuals who don't need traditional care, which is often expensive and scarce, but rather those who just need a little support. Aimed at a market which is previously untapped, this strategy could really help companiions to get ahead.

Due to its relative youth, the key challenge for companiions will be building a community of users quickly. In particular, it will need to prioritise accessibility, since the elderly community at which its brand is largely aimed is often more tech-averse than other groups of society.
