Our take

Given Comparethemarket's status as a household name in the UK, it’s rather surprising that the price comparison platform has only been operating since 2006. Since then, price comparison websites have surged into the mainstream – particularly for motor insurance.

Along with the likes of GoCompare, Confused.com and Money Supermarket, Comparethemarket is easily one of the leaders in its field. That said, it’s an interesting time for price comparison sites.

While the rising cost of living and premiums in the UK hint at growth as customers look for better deals, new regulations to prevent insurance providers from “price-walking” (offering low introductory fees and increasing premiums over time), may end up with fewer customer switch overs.

However, even if the market does take a slight decline, the brand power and popularity of Comparethemarket should see it through any turbulence. It’s also worth noting that while owners BGL Group sold its own insurance company (BGLi) in early 2022, it chose to keep ownership of and full focus on the price comparison website.
