Our take

Scientific progress is often hard to predict due to most grant research being guided by intrinsic curiosity. The Cooperative AI Foundation funds research in promising areas guided by valuable curiosity, as well as the importance, neglectedness, and tractability of the project.

Advancing the cooperative intelligence of AI can prove to be very beneficial not just today, but over the next 10-20 years. The Cooperative AI Foundation supports research in differential progress, aimed at improving cooperative capabilities (without creating a greater ‘alignment problem’ with which the AI can diverge and become dangerous), leading to significant increases in social welfare.

After receiving a substantial grant from the Center on Emerging Risk Research, the foundation has thus far issued grants to support research at Carnegie Mellon University and at the University of Oxford. The foundation is actively seeking research proposals and is well set to be a driving force behind cooperative intelligence AI.

  • CAIF is committed to advancing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Our mission is to improve the cooperative intelligence of advanced AI for the benefit of all, and believe we can only achieve that if we build a diverse team, work inclusively and address underrepresentation and unfairness in all that we do. As a foundation, with access to funding and resources we recognise that our decisions have the potential to reinforce or challenge existing inequality. We aim to challenge inequality where it exists. We operate in a field that is predominantly led by people from more privileged demographics and believe it is essential to amplify other voices and build a more globally representative sector if we are to achieve our goals.
