Our take

Dispo is a social media platform and app that is based around the concept of a disposable camera. Users can take photos through the "disposable-style" camera lens, but unlike a traditional camera app, they must then wait 24 hours for the photos to be 'developed'. Members of the platform can then post their developed photos to their accounts.

Dispo, originally named David's Disposables, was co-founded by Youtuber and social media influencer David Dobrik. Dobrik has amassed a huge social media following which allowed Dispo to quickly rise in popularity. Dobrik, however, was implicated in a sexual assault allegation that saw him step down from the board of Dispo. Dispo has since distanced itself from the negative media attention of this scandal by focusing less on promotion and more on new product features including NFTs.

Dispo sets itself apart from Instagram by moving away from the "perfect aesthetic" that has previously dominated social media. Instead, it's hoping to capture a new wave of social media that focuses on spontaneity and not being tethered to a phone. It's a trend that is reported to be growing in popularity, and so it may provide Dispo with an opportunity to challenge the multibillion-dollar ecosystem of Instagram.
