Our take

AirBnB has revolutionised the way we experience travel accomodation, but unless you have local friends in a foreign city you're probably going to be dining at a restaurant. EatWith exists to change that with a social marketplace for diners that allows anyone to enjoy an authentic home-cooked meal anywhere in the world by connecting travellers with hosts eager to share their cooking.

With hosts in over 130 countries, EatWith is the largest culinary experiences marketplace, mainly facing competition in this space from efforts that are local to each individual city. It stands out thanks to the cooking ability and friendliness of its hosts - only around 4% of those that apply are accepted - and the polished user experience of its website and app which was named one of Apple's best apps of 2016 and 2017.

EatWith has expanded in this space through aggressive acquisitions - the company was originally named VizEat, with EatWith being one of its early competitors, and it has also purchased Cookening, a Parisian social dining company. Although the pace of acquisitions has slowed, the company seems set to grow as more people turn to hosting to gain some additional revenue, thanks to the rising cost of living and a recent increase in foreign tourism travel.
