Our take

Truck driving is not an easy job. The hours are long and the roads can be hazardous. With a national truck driver shortage, truckers are having to work further away from their homes. For businesses, expenses are high.

Embark is a company that thinks autonomous-driven vehicles are the potential solution to these problems. It is building self-driving truck technology that aims to make freight and logistic services more efficient while making the roads safer.

CEO, Alex Rodrigues is a robotics prodigy who started building them in his childhood. He met fellow co-founder Brandon Moak while studying mechatronics engineering, where they worked together to build Canada’s first self-driving vehicle. Embark's team is also made up of a group of specialists from companies like Google, Cruise, Audi and NASA.

Operating in a freight trucking market estimated upwards of $500 billion, it is no surprise that they have attracted the backing from high-quality investors. Embark is embarking on something special. But with new technology come challenges. It may take time for the world to truly trust self-driving vehicles.

Company values

  • Prioritize Safety - We are committed to making the roads safer for everyone. Every decision we make prioritizes the safety of our team, our partners, our industry, and our fellow road users. While the transportation industry necessarily includes some risk, our ability to plan, monitor, and understand safety sets the cadence for testing and development. We all hold the responsibility to speak up if we observe behavior that is inconsistent with our values
  • Be Reliable - We deliver on our commitments. Each of us is a critical part of the team, and as such we are each trusted to deliver outcomes that matter for advancing our mission. We are constantly reinforcing our mutually-shared trust by communicating proactively, asking for and offering help, and prioritizing our mission and values. When we make a mistake or miss a goal, we own it, and we do better the next time
  • Simplify the problem - We find simplicity when facing complex problems. We are scrappy underdogs that take pride in finding creative solutions. Though our ambition is immense, we always seek ways to strip down complexity and find pragmatic approaches to how we move towards our mission. We are constantly seeking opportunities to be resourceful, find efficiencies, and build scalable solutions to focus our efforts on solving the most important problems
  • Inspire Collegiality - We make Embark a great place to work for our colleagues. We go out of our way to welcome new team members and respect each others’ views, experiences, and backgrounds. We treat each other with kindness – even when disagreeing on substance or sharing and receiving hard truths for the good of the team and the mission. Our shared trust is a competitive advantage, because collegiality and winning are not mutually exclusive; at Embark, they are mutually reinforcing
  • Win Together - We are a winning team whose united strength is greater than the sum of its parts. We attack problems, not people. We work together across all functions in order to achieve our mission, and no team or individual works in a silo or attempts to be a lone-wolf hero. We are pursuing a deeply meaningful mission and believe hard work, perseverance and collaboration are the only way to tackle a complex problem of this size
