To defend everyone’s right to an equal chance in life.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission is an organisation that promotes equality and non-discrimination laws across England, Wales and Scotland. With a history of high-profile investigations that have included racism within the British National Party, police misconduct allegations and antisemitism within the Labour Party, the EHRC presents its work directly to parliament and investigates both individual and organisational breaches of human rights.
Built from a team of lawyers and researchers, there is no denying that EHRC’s enforcement of corporate responsibility and individual human rights has produced culturally and politically relevant work. That said, it has also been scrutinized itself - for example, an internal investigation into chairwoman Kishwer Falkner's handling of transgender laws, though dropped, amounted to a decision that the case itself had been mishandled.
This has led to a risk of the EHRC being downgraded in its accreditation to the UN, due to its definitions of gender and sex. Despite this, however, the organization continues to strive for positive change, and it will be interesting to see how it responds and improves in the wake of this situation.
