To use lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to racism, antisemitism, and other forms of bigotry and hate.
Working across the US and the UK, Facing History & Ourselves was founded in 1976 in Boston. Its mission is to educate teachers and students better to combat bigotry by using historical lessons from the past. With a wealth of resources and educational research behind it, what was once a single classroom in Massachusetts has grown into a worldwide network reaching millions of students.
Facing History & Ourselves operates via classroom resources and professional development training programmes that examine racist, antisemitic and prejudiced events from history, and how those choices might relate to contemporary ones. It partners with organisations and educational leaders to better equip students and teachers to face these challenges.
With 50 years of experience behind it, the need for better educational resources to combat prejudice is more vital than ever. Facing History & Ourselves is adapting to the digital age through online programmes and a research library that have the potential to reach even more students worldwide.
