From mountains to deserts, oceans to forests, and beyond - FATMAP wants to make these extraordinary places and their endless possibilities more accessible.
Launched in 2015, FatMap is a high-resolution 3D global map platform aimed at hikers and adventure sports enthusiasts. With its detailed maps and relevant information on route planning and terrain, FatMap was designed in conjunction with leading athletes and local guides.
Though it’s true that Google, a far larger company, has already created some features for its map app that are focused on adventure sports, FatMap’s application is far more detail and context-oriented and based on an ethos of sustainability. This comes as no surprise as one of its founders was a member of the British Ski Mountaineering team.
Between its founding and 2018, FatMap gained two sets of seed and early VC funding each and has expanded its map service and digital flythroughs from France to over 50 countries. The app itself is in competition with MemoryMap, ViewRanger, and Strava when it comes to resort and on-piste map tracking. These are far larger companies with a grip on the adventure holiday industry, but when it comes to off-piste route and terrain-generating intelligence, FatMap is in a league of its own and has the backing of leading skiers and snowboarders.
