Company mission

To enable the open source community and developers to reap the benefits of easy to use document databases, while staying away from vendor lock-in, and fauxpen licenses.

Our take

MongoDB is a life-changing technology for many developers, empowering them to build applications faster than using relational databases. However, the platform is no longer purely open-source, requiring developers to hold a constraining SSPL license. FerretDB was therefore created to be a ‘true’ open-source alternative.

The core of FerretDB’s solution is a stateless proxy, which converts MongoDB protocol queries to SQL, and uses PostgreSQL as a database engine. This will be compatible with MongoDB drivers, and should work as a drop-in replacement to MongoDB in many cases.

The company is building out greater and greater functionality for FerretDB. That will mean an expanded product team as well as close collaboration with the growing community of developers relying on the open-source technology.
