To keep the UK and its citizens safe.
GCHQ, the UK's intelligence, cyber, and security agency, is tasked with protecting the UK from a wide range of security threats. It specialises in signal intelligence (SIGINT), monitoring communications and data to detect threats and provide intelligence to government agencies.
Founded in 1919 as the Government Code and Cypher School, GCHQ originally focused on code-breaking and cryptography during World War I. Over the years, its role evolved, particularly with the rise of digital technologies, expanding to address global security challenges in the cyber domain.
As these cyber threats grew in significance, GCHQ has adapted by strengthening its cybersecurity capabilities and enhancing its focus on intelligence-sharing with international partners. This evolution reflects the increasing importance of technology and digital security in national defence strategies.
