Our take
The sports genre is one of the oldest in gaming history, with almost every sport turned into a video game over the years – but the most popular by far remains football, namely EA’s FIFA franchise. However, with the football gaming space a virtual monopoly, there has been little in the way of offerings for gamers who want to play a different type of football game. GOALS aims to remedy this, by creating a multiplayer football game with a play-to-earn model through NFT rewards, that is competitive and eSports ready.
Possibly one of the most distinct features of current sports games is a tendency to focus on real world teams and players, that are updated each year to reflect changing leagues and transfers. GOALS is abandoning this, offering instead the chance to create unique players through its DNA system, bolstering team and player diversity. The reward for playing comes in the form of NFTs that are fully owned by players and can be traded on an open marketplace. In addition, the company has stated the game will not utilise catch-up mechanics, enabling matches to be as competitive as possible, and it aims to employ a division system with promotion and relegation dependent on performance.
With ambitions to challenge EA’s FIFA franchise, GOALS has a steep slope to climb ahead. The company has received good levels of funding towards growing its product and business, to bring novel competition into the football gaming space, and its "Play To Earn" NFT system is a savvy way to attract customers. However, at such an early stage, time can only tell how the game itself is received by audiences.
