To create a platform that encourages our youth to get active through the game of rugby.
Regular physical activity is vital for developing children, carrying a host of benefits ranging from building physical strength to improving mental health. Despite this, child participation in sports is falling. In the UK, for example, the number of children aged 5 to 15 participating in sports monthly fell by over 4% between 2009 and 2018. This might not sound like much, but when you consider that the UK has over 3.8 million children living in it, the figure becomes quite alarming.
GeeGee wants to fix this. Its mission is to encourage participation and engagement in sports through what it calls "challenge games" - the use of online mini-challenges aimed at making sports more fun. The idea is to take concepts from viral trends like toilet roll keep-ups and crossbar challenges, then apply these to conventional sports. By creating so-called "MicroSports", GeeGee wants to modernise the incentives attached to participating in sports, bringing in the next generation of participation.
This disruptive approach, which combines sports, esports and social media, has great potential. The GeeGee app is currently in its early stages, and it will be exciting to see what it can achieve in the coming years.
