To improve billions of lives through biodesign, by imagining and deeply exploring nature’s tree of life and combine biology, protein optimization, and fermentation to create sustainable, high-performance consumer proteins with optimal functionality and benefits.
Despite advances in computer science, biology and medicine, a large proportion of consumer products still use animal-derived ingredients. Yet, there is growing demand for cleaner and environmentally-sustainable products that are not cruel to animals.
Geltor is a bio-design company that makes proteins, like collagen and elastin that are used in beauty, food and beverage products. They are cultivated in a sustainable fermentation process using plants. Therefore, the ingredients are purer, more effective and are also suitable for vegans. The co-founders, Alex Lorestani, Ph.D., and Nick Ouzounov, Ph.D., who both completed their doctoral degree in Molecular Biology at Princeton University. In 2021, the company launched the world’s first edible vegan collagen under the PrimaColl brand in the food and nutrition sector.
The global consumer packaged goods industry is worth approximately $2 trillion. With all eyes on cleaner living, more ethical products are likely to grow in demand. However, Geltor's plan to make it easy for the world's most iconic brands to build sustainable products is very ambitious. The question is will the big players like Procter & Gamble and L'Oréal be willing to increase their costs, given their mass market approach?
