Our take

Dubbed 'generation rent', young people are becoming increasingly likely to never own their own home. With high rent prices inhibiting saving for a deposit along with ever inflated house prices caused by limited affordable housing, the rate of home ownership has slumped over the past 20 years.

Gen H aim to be a new type of lender, providing a fully digital mortgage and features including online consultations with mortgage experts. They also provide a platform for home owners to track and manage their housing wealth.

Gen H can also incorporate "investors" into your mortgage. these can be friends or family who can help you out financially, providing a system for you to pay them back with interest on their investment. There is no shortage of potential users for the platform, and so the company has the real chance to expand its operations moving forwards.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Gen H

  • We are working to transform both how you buy a home and who can buy a home. To achieve this mission of financial inclusion, we require a diverse and inclusive team. We strongly believe that diversity drives innovation. A key strength of Gen H is our mix of mortgage industry veterans and mortgage newbies. This is a tough balance to maintain, but it’s important. We believe that a team with diverse backgrounds, experiences, expertise, and ideas can come together to create the best product for our customers. When we mix and mingle, challenging each other and learning from each other, magic happens. Therefore, we look for talented individuals who are passionate about challenging the status quo and taking on big problems. We believe that we do our best work when we’re given the space to be ourselves, and we’re committed to a culture where all of us are heard. We are committed to encouraging equality, diversity, and inclusion among our workforce. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative of all sections of society and our customers, and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best.
  • What we know: We know that access to home finance is exclusionary. We are working to change this. We know that building a diverse team is critical to our success. We know that diversity and inclusivity makes for a better workplace, housing market, and society. We’re striving to build a workplace where every can feel welcome to bring their full self. Being a start-up means we often have to rely on hiring within our current networks, and that this can lead to a lack of diversity. We’re working to create more robust hiring practices to address this. We are always learning, improving and open to change. What we do: We work to be a lender who includes rather than excludes aspiring homeowners. We implement systems to reduce bias in the hiring process. We hire for potential over privilege. We proactively invite applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds by adding our diversity statement to our vacancies. We actively source diverse profiles and advertise our roles on a wide variety of channels. We use structured hiring processes and scorecards, which we regularly review, to objectively evaluate candidates. We constantly learn and improve.
