Their mission is to help create a simple, joined-up and personalised experience of government for everyone.
The Government Digital Service works with departments across government to show how digital ways of working can deliver services that meet the needs of users and at lower costs.
The organisation's crowning success is gov.uk. By centralising government services on one platform, focusing on the user, GDS is helping the UK government fulfil Tim O'Reilly's vision for 'Government-as-a-Platform'.
The GDS has been a powerful force for change in the UK Government and has inspired many other governments globally to follow the UK's example.
The agency has however come under some scrutiny, after the recent failed efforts to develop single digital identities for UK citizens through the 'Verify' project. Now it is looking to find relevance among departments competing for influence over the government's digital strategy.
