ake the healthiest, most sustainable pet food under the sun.
Livestock feed is the biggest expense for pastoral farmers, and it’s rising in price. Consequently, we’ve seen a flurry of companies using protein-rich, easy-to-rear insects to create sustainable and carbon neutral animal feed. AgriProtein and Entocycle are among the larger-scale operations, but Grubbly Farm is applying the same concept at a more boutique level. They use farm-grown black soldier fly grubs to chicken feed for small-scale flocks, like those which have come into vogue in the US over recent years as more Americans turn their hand to amateur poultry farming.
This boom in backyard-chicken interest is, for Grubbly farms, happily overlapping with an increased consumer interest in sustainable and environmentally friendly products. Their grubs are reared on food waste, and as proteins can replace fishmeal in pet food, easing pressure on overfished species.
Grubbly farms is wise to be looking at expanding their product offerings. Dog food snacks, currently under development, are a good place to start, and whilst this will pit them against insect-based pet food companies like Jiminiy’s and Yora, Grubbly Farms have laid a strong foundation to help them compete.
