Our take

Gruntwork believes that although software is one of the most important inventions in human history, it also requires too much effort to understand, use and maintain. It wants to help customers focus less on the infrastructure of the software they use, and more time using said software to make an impact.

Gruntwork addresses long lead times for new account deployments, fragmented software governance and rising costs by providing customers with a modern DevOps platform. This platform helps users by providing pre-built models and patterns for their code and compliance processes. In short, Gruntwork does the infrastructure gruntwork.

Gruntwork pitches itself as an alternative to consultancy services, giving users the tools to create their software faster, and at a lower price. This differentiation should attract customers at the start of their software product’s journey, if they can keep their pitch accessible to the layman.

Benefits

  • Medical, Dental, & Vision - We offer a range of high-quality insurance plans, most of which are fully paid for by the company. For countries other than the US, this includes extra coverage on top of your statutory insurance
  • Retirement Plan - We contribute a portion of your salary to your 401(k) or your pension (depending on your country of residence)
  • Profit-Sharing Bonuses - We set aside a pot of money at the end of each year based on company profits, and distribute bonuses according to a formula that takes into account your level within the company and the length of your tenure
  • Competitive & Transparent Salary - We’re committed to paying above-market salaries. To reduce bias and increase transparency, we compute all salaries using formulas. The formula factors in your title and uses a multiplier to produce a result that's above market for that title in your area
  • Generous Equity Grants - We all share a stake in the success of the business, and our equity grants reflect that. To reduce bias and increase transparency, we compute all stock grants using formulas which factor in your title and hire date. We also offer a Change in Control Bonus Plan, inspired by Progressive Equity, so in the event of a large exit, all employees will take home a larger portion of the proceeds (not just the founders)
  • Wellness Budget - We give you a personal budget of $1,000 USD per month to spend on your workspace (e.g., a co-working space), health (e.g., gym, yoga), time savings (e.g., babysitter), and/or learning (e.g., books, courses). How you spend it is up to you
  • Hardware Budget - We buy you a brand new Apple MacBook Pro (or other computer of your choosing of equivalent value) upon joining. It will be owned by you, not the company. We’ll also replace it every 3 years

Company values

  • Do the right thing - You almost always know what's the right thing to do. It's the choice that is fair, ethical, and decent. It's the choice that lets you feel good as a human being. Always make that choice, even if it means losing a client or losing money. Be a good person
  • Take pride in your craft - Whether you write code, make sales calls, or work on legal documents, do it well. You could call it "attention to detail," "great taste," "craftsmanship" or, as Michael Feather's puts it, "Clean code always looks like it was written by someone who cares." Whatever you call it, always strive to do work you can be proud of
  • Get things done - The counterpart to pride in craftsmanship is finding a way to get things done. The most beautiful code that never ships or sits unfinished adds no value, no matter how beautifully it's crafted. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good
  • Incrementalism - The best way to get things done is to do work incrementally. We believe that quantity of iteration beats quality of iteration. Plan projects so that every increment is valuable by itself. Optimize for fast feedback rather than trying to come up with a perfect plan. Aim to recover quickly rather than trying to avoid all mistakes
