Our take

Transcription and subtitling services are required in many different industries to support today’s international business landscape, and whilst this sounds simple, it is often difficult to find an effective solution. Whilst there are many transcription and subtitling services online, they are usually expensive when accurate, inaccurate when cheap, and lack the tools that companies need to apply them effectively.

Happy Scribe provides an AI-driven transcription and subtitling service online, allowing users to translate its automated services across over 60 languages, integrate and apply it through an interactive editing tool, and integrate it with APIs such as Youtube's closed captions. The company claims its automated AI-driven solution is up to 85% accurate, but users can pay for human-interrupted services to reach 99%+ accuracy.

Whilst Happy Scribe will inevitably face competition from existing transcription solutions, the company still shows a cutting edge by providing an end-to-end online workflow and deployment toolkit. Furthermore, by employing a workforce of translators and language experts, the company’s human-interrupted AI transcription solution goes beyond the language capabilities of existing services.

  • What we're aiming for
  • 🎯 We're 35+ people at the moment and we're planning to grow by around 10 more by the end of the year. This is the most important time to prioritise Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. We want it set in the foundations of our core team
  • 🤝 We believe diversity has to go hand-in-hand with equity and inclusion.
  • Equity to us means going further than building a diverse team: we are intentionally aiming to bring in more diversity into the roles and departments where it can have the biggest impact, like engineering or leadership roles, where tech traditionally lacks diversity
  • What we're doing. 🔎 Targeted sourcing. We consider applications from everyone, but when we look for candidates, we actively look for people who are under-represented at the moment in our company, especially in certain areas like engineering or product.
  • ☂️ Inclusive job adverts thanks to neutral language and limited bullet points. We run all our job adverts through tools like Text Analysis and Gender Decoder. These tools detect linguistic biases to help ensure our copy is inclusive, well-balanced and accessible to everyone. We try to keep the core competencies in our job adverts under 6 bullet points since research shows any more than that decreases applications from female candidates.
  • 🎓 No degree requirements. We don’t list university degrees as a requirement in our job adverts. Getting a degree isn't the only way to get really good at something, and we value real world experience as much as we value formal education
  • 📈 Above market-rate wages. Rent in Barcelona is expensive and many roles outside of product simply don’t pay enough: we pay above market rate for these roles to make sure everyone can live comfortably whilst working here, not just the product team.
  • ❓Structured interview processes with clear assessment criteria. Research shows that structured interviews help reduce bias when evaluating candidates. Of course, we don’t interview like robots: we ask personalised or follow up questions too! But we have a core set of questions that we ask everyone, with assessment criteria discussed in advance, so we everyone can be evaluated fairly
  • 👥 Two people per interview (except the first call). We have two or more people from the team in each interview, except the first screening call, to avoid giving too much power to one person’s biases. Two interviewers can help make up for each other’s blind spots, notice something that the other person missed and help each other assess people more fairly. When we are unsure about someone, especially if it’s a screening call where only one person was interviewing, we get second opinions from other people in the team to check our biases. Sometimes we do this for applications as well.
  • 🤓 We’re feedback nerds. We love giving feedback to candidates: we believe it’s important to give something back in exchange for the time invested in getting to know Happy Scribe. There’s an extra advantage to this: if the feedback needs to go to the candidate, it means it needs to be well articulated, fair and justified. A generic “no” isn’t a thing here, and this helps us make sure we’re not biased when we don’t move forward with someone.
