HeavyFinance's mission is to remove 1 gigaton of CO2 emissions by 2050 through investment in sustainable agriculture.

Our take

Not often discussed in the debate around climate change is the role of agriculture in the production of CO2 emissions. A third of greenhouse gases are reported to come from agricultural products, causing tension between food production for a growing population and climate change mitigation. HeavyFinance wants to be part of the solution to this tension and has amassed a global marketplace of investors and farmers.

With the mission of removing a gigaton of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere by 2050, HeavyFinance funds the use of regenerative soil management practices that essentially store CO2 in the soil. Matching its lofty aims and product with a range of financial solutions, HeavyFinance facilitates loans and investments across five European markets, creating an ecosystem of agriculture businesses and investors that facilitates carbon reduction and food chain resilience.

HeavyFinance plans for further growth into new markets off the back of a March 2023 seed funding round. If it can do so over the next few years, the company’s savvy melding of financial lending and investment with tangible carbon reduction processes could make a real difference.
