Our take

Home Office Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) designs, builds and develops services for the rest of the department and for government, those that help people apply for visas or passports; support policing and counter-terrorism operations; and protect the UK’s borders.

The Home Office recently announced it is to establish a more flexible and collective approach to digital transformation, including consolidating its technology products and becoming more data-driven, in a three-year strategy that marks a major departure for the UK government department.

The strategy will see the Home Office’s DDaT division develop new technology services internally after radically transforming its relationship with outside suppliers. The strategy is a major shift for the Home Office: like most other UK departments, it has historically been heavily driven by cost and time outputs and tended toward more bespoke technology development.

These projects were often marred by poor outcomes and cost over runs. The Home Office hopes that the use of shared technology and infrastructure will reduce the amount of money the DDaT function spends on duplicated capabilities and silos, as well as speed up the delivery of projects.
