The rise of memes and image-based social media content has changed the way that the youth of today communicate. Despite the impact this has had, meme and content creators remain unpaid for their work due to a lack of formal infrastructure for hosting such content.
Imgur provides an online platform for image hosting that currently sits at the forefront of the rise of meme sharing. The website has so far never paid its users, but the company is now integrating paid subscriptions into Imgur's framework to optimize the user experience. These subscription fees then provide monetization to content creators through micropayments.
Originally a non-profit website, the company stands out amongst the variety of image-hosting platforms by providing compensation for content creators which in turn personalizes the content subscribers are shown. The company believes that viral content creators deserve payment platforms in the same way that independent musicians receive micropayments for their streams.
