Kernel is a science company specializing in non-invasive technology to record brain activity. The company has two primary product lines: Flux, which detects magnetic fields created by neurons in the brain, and Flow, which measures blood in the brain. Kernel's technology is making brain monitoring accessible and safe, offering access to its products via a Neuroscience as a Service (NaaS) model which means clients pay for these products as and when they're needed.
Perhaps what sets Kernel apart in the bioscience field is that the company wasn't founded by a scientist, but by a serial entrepreneur. Kernel has been created with a view not just to making quality neuroscience products that can be used in both medicine and other fields, but also with a priority placed on making these products affordable and scalable.
Commercial neuroscience is a growing market that's expected to reach $41.6 billion by 2031, with even the likes of Elon Musk backing Kernel competitor, Neuralink Corp. Kernel's attitude of using neuroscience to improve people's lives - rather than just making money - will be key in setting them apart.
Kernel's research team is expanding into other medical fields, conducting research into neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The company's primary challenge will be bringing the price of its products down to achieve the accessibility it's aiming for.
