The institutions that provide grants currently rely on manual processes to verify the financial information of applicants, which is a very slow process requiring a lot of time and effort. Lightning is a social enterprise setting out to change this by developing proprietary technology which quickly verifies financial needs and accelerates decision-making.
According to Lightning Reach, their proprietary technology can reduce the time associated with this process from over 5 weeks to 3 days. They also decrease the amount of paperwork involved whilst increasing the security of data used.
The startup was founded in the middle of the Covid-19 Pandemic, with the purpose of helping people in financial hardship access financial support faster. They are early-stage and have already partnered with multiple institutions such as Turn2us, Do It, The Charity for Civil Servants, Smallwoodtrust and Plaid. They currently operate solely in the UK.

We have an open, caring and honest team here at Lightning. Wellbeing in the team is paramount and is promoted through regularly check-ins either as a group or via 1-1 sessions. We are encouraged to define our own ways of working and take regular breaks. Towards the end of last year I booked a trip to Sicily, which was a great opportunity to relax from a busy quarter in the lead up to our new product launch.

Everyone's voice matters at Lightning. Because the team is so small, most decisions are made as a team and we all have an chance to give our own opinion. The team is really open and ready to listen, so new ideas can come from anywhere. Even when we have different opinions, it's all really positive and constructive.

Ren, our founder, really values input from us before making decisions. If one of us has an opinion, we will talk about it as a team and good ideas are adopted. We have fortnightly "experiment" meetings in which we are all encouraged to put forward new ideas, then they are discussed and are generally progressed.
