Online classes have been booming in recent years, with brick-and-mortar institutions pivoting towards virtual offerings, and students looking for additional at-home resources to supplement learning. Part of this new zeal for digital education has been directed at language acquisition, and Lingoda was one of the edtech companies to cash in.
What distinguishes Lingoda from many other companies who picked up traction over this period (like Duolingo, Memrise, and Rosetta Stone) is the style of teaching. Lingoda connects students with 24/7 interactive language immersion classes on Zoom, run by native-level speakers. This makes it remarkably competitive, as it offers the scheduling flexibility that language schools can’t, the depth of content that many apps fail to deliver, and the highly effective face-to-face interaction that self-directed courses usually lack.
Their relatively modest language selection (English, Spanish, French, and German) is curious, however. With no public plans to expand on these any time soon, this could see them lose out on students.
