Company mission

To inspire elementary school students to fall in love with reading by blurring the line between learning and entertainment.

Our take

Illiteracy has been a primary concern in the US for decades, and a large percentage of children do not perform at the reading level expected of them – with many kids saying the reason they struggle to progress with reading is that they find it boring. Litnerd provides books and lessons plans designed to keep children engaged with books both in the classroom and at home.

Litnerd was initially created as a tool for parents, but the company has since expanded to work with schools. On top of its book club for families, it delivers reading programs consisting of hour-long, weekly sessions. Students read the books between sessions, then a re-enacted scene is streamed into the class in school to move the story along.

Litnerd lessons were originally based around existing stories, but the company has worked to establish its own publishing operations. The aim is to produce books that will engage every age group, and to celebrate diversity to ensure all children can see themselves in stories. Litnerd's proposition is clearly well-regarded, as it is already a contracted vendor with the New York City Department of Education.
