To build open-source, decentralised social media that gives people back control over their data and their reach.
Dubbed as “the alternative to twitter”, the company is a free open-source social network where users can follow and discover friends. The platform allows users to share links, pictures, text and videos separating itself from competitor platforms by being the leading decentralised social media platform. Mastodon now has over 2 million monthly active users. Operating without ads, the company is clear on it’s hope to be the open-source social network that gives its users the utmost control over their data and their reach.
It allows users to join a slew of different servers run by various groups and individuals, rather than one central platform controlled by a single company and this is what is causing a stir and encouraging customers to make the shift from the likes of Twitter.
Founded in 2016 the company is built of a very small team that relies on external agencies for certain segments of the workflow. The Mastodon software can now be used online or through the IOS or Android app.
