To stop micro-pollution at source.
Micro-pollutants, such as microplastics, are one of the leading forms of pollution entering our water. There are an estimated 5.25 trillion particles of plastic in the world’s oceans, with countless more in our waterways and our bodies. While there isn’t much that can be done (yet) about the micro-pollutants already in these systems, Matter has set out to slow the release of new ones by stopping them at the source.
The startup is pioneering plastic capture and has developed a retrofit, microfibre filter for commercial and domestic washing machines, called Gulp. It effectively filters out microplastics and other fibres. The company is working hard to further develop a filter that can be integrated into the washing machine itself and is hoping to have this done in time for the new French Legislation that all washing machines are required to have a microplastic filter by 2025.
With its impressive list of partners, backers, and accelerators, Matter is well set to see growth as its innovative tech plays a major role in reducing micro-pollutants.
