Our take

MindPortal is developing a non-invasive personal brain-computer interface. In practice, this means building wearable headbands that will allow users to seamlessly interact with technology with a mere thought. The founders are former medical students and have already developed a product that uses light signals to measure brain waves in a way that is up to a hundred times more accurate than EEG devices.

So far, they've already developed the world’s first virtual reality game that enables players to control the game with direct thought intentions – players can shoot fruits using their mind. Elon Musk's Neuralink operates in a similar space, developing implantable brain–computer interfaces.

MindPortal joined Y Combinator as part of their Winter 2021 cohort. After raising their seed round, the company is now growing by hiring additional neuroscientists, product engineers, and machine learning experts.

  • A preferred office: home ratio is 4:1 but 3:2 is also fine
  • Salary is negotiable (we understand this can put applicants off but because of how hard it can be to find this person, we don’t want to restrict ourselves by salary, particularly when we can offer attractive share options too.   • This is a YC-backed deep-tech company with a presence in London & San Francisco
  • They have raised $5.5m from Y-Combinator and other top-tier early stage VCs
  • They are raising a Series-A in Q4/Q1 and this person will join as part of that successful raise
  • We are kicking off the search in Q3 ‘23 because a) it takes a long time to find exceptional people and b) most have long-ish notice periods. Ideally we’d have identified who is joining by Q4 ‘23 and they can then be invited into the strategic & external investment conversations happening in the run up to Christmas
  • The founders know each other from University and have built real credibility and depth in their space. They will become more externally facing, whilst this person runs the engineering function internally (although will still be involved in strategic leadership and external conversations)
