Our take

NGINX is an open source web server that has become very popular in recent years. Coming later to the market than other familiar names such as Apache and Microsoft, NGINX has rapidly increased its market share and is now the web server of choice for many top businesses such as Salesforce, Google, IBM, Twitter, Apple and Intel. F5 Networks acquired NGINX in 2019 for $670 million.

Subject to some controversy, F5 Networks was sued by Lynwood Investments shortly after the buyout. Lynwood claimed that the NGINX software was developed while the originators were working for Rambler, a Russian technology firm, and so they believed the NGINX software belonged to them. However, the case was dismissed with a leave to amend due to statutes of limitation.

This doesn’t seem to have significantly negatively affected NGINX as the business continues to add to its product portfolio to create a complete suite of applications that covers everything from application delivery to security and monitoring.
