Our take

Accessing the internet has become a part of the daily lives of billions of people across the globe, with network use ever-increasing as lifestyles further digitize. Ookla collects data on network performance and connectivity through its "Speedtest" product, providing insights for operators to better plan and build networks, and communicate performance and availability to customers.

Ookla's enterprise solutions use crowdsourced data and controlled testing to monitor performance and customer experience, delivering actionable insights for operators, businesses, government agencies, and more to optimize their wireless and fixed networks. For consumers, Ookla's platform enables them to test connection speeds, and track and diagnose service issues.

Ookla serves a range of organizations from Virgin Media O2 to the State of Vermont Department of Public Service, and boasts a long list of varied case studies. The acquisition of CellRebel, a connectivity data analytics company, will allow the company to further extend and improve its consumer network experience insights.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Ookla

  • Community enrichment: We partner with organizations local to our office locations, like TAF (Technology Access Foundation) in Seattle, to help further their mission of changing educational systems and serving people of color and those in underrepresented communities. We proudly partner with the Research Center at University of Memphis, and Code Crew, a diverse-led computer education program for people of all ages in Memphis, TN.
  • Returnship and internship programs: Ookla offers a returnship program that provides workplace reentry support for those who have been out of the workforce for an extended period of time. Through a partnership with Ada Developers Academy (ADA), Ookla also provides an internship program with a path to full time hire for women and gender-diverse people in our software development teams. We are continuing to expand these programs and develop relationships with local organizations to increase the number of returnship and internship roles in the future.
  • Data sharing: Ookla for Good™ is an initiative to provide data, analysis, and content to organizations and communities that are seeking to improve people’s lives through internet accessibility and education. We partner with like-minded organizations to provide unbiased information about the state of networks worldwide.
  • Recruitment and hiring (1): We have adopted hiring practices to ensure our recruiters and interviewers confront biases and remain fair and transparent throughout the entire application process. During recruitment, we use technologies purpose-built to help find and attract candidates who are underrepresented. We are consistently involved in hiring fairs and tech events highlighting diverse individuals. We have established partnerships with ADA, TAF, and Code Crew.
  • Recruitment and hiring (2): We utilize behavioral and functional questions during the interview process, focusing only on job-related questions. We avoid discussing candidates with one another before our team debrief and we require written feedback from each interviewer prior to group discussion to control for biases. When it comes time to hire, a trained interview debrief facilitator guides the hiring committee in a conversation that avoids evaluations based on gut-feeling or assumptions of “culture fit.” As a company, we are continuously evaluating our areas of growth and bias to maintain our commitment to fair and inclusive hiring practices.
  • Employee education and training: Ookla offers year-round employee educational opportunities and benefits to foster an inclusive and equitable workplace for every individual. Included in these offerings are enhanced parental leave and Maven fertility options, anti-racism and LGBTQIA+ resource libraries, compliance training, employee resource groups, listening sessions, and learning and development workshops dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition, Ookla provides paid volunteer hours and annual employee donation matching for employees to offer their time and energy to help with a cause or organization that aligns with their values.
  • ERGs: Through Ziff Davis, Ookla team members have access to six executive-sponsored Employee Resource Groups aligned with the Asian, Black, 2SLGBTQIA+ and Latinx/Hispanic communities, Families, and a Women’s Leadership Program. Each ERG increases opportunities for networking, learning and development, and access to senior leadership for these identity groups. ERGs are led by employee volunteers, overseen and mentored by executive sponsors, and supported by our Global DEI and HR Programs team. Each ERG receives $1M in pro bono advertising donated by Ziff Davis to share with charities aligned with its goals.
