To create, maintain and distribute detailed location information for Great Britain.
Ordnance Survey (OS) is Great Britain’s national mapping agency. Its primary service is to carry out the official surveying of GB. In doing so, it provides the most accurate and up-to-date geographical data - the most trusted of its kind - relied upon by government, business and individuals.
It was founded in 1791, providing it with centuries to establish itself as the leading mapping service. In spite of its historical roots, it has remained relevant by shifting from a centuries-old mapping company into a big data powerhouse. Investments have enabled it to collect richer data through the use of advanced geographical information systems tools and software, ensuring its reputation as the most trusted geospatial partner is maintained.
OS in touch with how it can create positive change in a modern world, namely in relation to sustainability. It recently became involved in the sustainability research initiative SEED and the collaborative effort to support data solutions to tackle the impacts of climate change, including an investigation into the role Earth Observation can pay in detecting sewage from space,
