To help people save money and lower stress by making database management systems autonomous and self-driving.
Databases underpin the apps and softwares in increasing use today, with the majority of companies using more than one, and many now expanding into the more complex region of the cloud. As this usage scales in both volume and complexity, the creation, management, and optimization of databases becomes a cumbersome task. It’s a no-brained use case for automation, but many companies have yet to incorporate it - OtterTune is looking to change that.
Its database performance optimization software uses AI to identify opportunities for refining the efficiency (and therefore cost-effectiveness) of database operations. Its tuning covers a spread of knobs including caching, paging, threading, and buffering for MySQL and PostgreSQL.
It’s a fairly new entrant to the scene, and will have to contend both with major players like IBM and Microsoft, and a slew of startups, including well-funded competitors Unravel Data, Turbonomic, and CloudHealth. The ace up OtterTune’s sleeve, however, is its leadership. It was founded by a heavy-hitting database management system and ML team from Carnegie Mellon. This deep-level expertise is likely to continue helping it build out the fine-grained algorithms that may give OtterTune a much-needed competitive advantage.
