Our take
Otto Car is London's and Europe's largest private hire rental fleet, with a large number of PCO (Public Carriage Office) cars for sale or hire. It supports the drivers on its 'Rent 2 Buy' scheme by offering free insurance, servicing, MOT, and a range of other benefits, including an online GP service.
In 2013, founder and chief executive Gurinder Dhillon read about Uber, realized that this could be a huge cultural change and bought a hybrid car to rent out as his first private hire vehicle.
The way we travel has been changing rapidly in recent years. Huge numbers of people are moving from ownership to shared mobility services. PCO drivers are providing a service that most people cannot do without anymore but, at the same time, it’s becoming harder and more expensive for everyday people to obtain a car and become a PCO driver in the UK. The biggest challenge for Otto Cars is to create the right conditions for common people to easily access this kind of occupation and earn an honest living without bearing excessive start-up costs.
Its reported that there are still around 9000 deaths a day in London alone due to the toxic air quality. Otto are now on a mission to clean up the air and streets by moving away from diesels, hybrids to fully electric PCO cars.
