Planera's mission is to pioneer technologies that free our planet from permanent waste.
Planera has made the world’s first certified flushable and biodegradable sanitary pads for people who menstruate. By producing a microplastics-free pad that completely degrades within thirty days, there’s now an alternative to single use plastic sanitary pads and indeed nonorganic tampons, which can take hundreds of years to decompose.
One hurdle Planera will have to overcome is price. As is to be expected, the manufacturing and materials used in its products leads to an above average cost. While this opens up questions about menstrual equity, which has been under the spotlight of late, it’s worth noting that these products do help the environment.
Without much venture capital investment thus far, Planera has taken a patient approach to growth. However, with sustainable goods now more popular than ever for those who can afford them, and Planera getting plenty of media attention, now may be the time to scale up.
