To use the power of sport to drive action on climate change.
Taking climate action at an individual and community level can be both an empowering and impactful way of making a difference to the environment. Evidence has shown that community climate action can deliver real environmental impact, and as the world looks to become more green in the near future, such efforts will be vital to the transition into a sustainable society.
However, a key difficulty for such community ventures has always been encouraging communities to take action in the first place. This is where Planet League comes in. It has created a tournament that directly engages football fans to do planet-saving activities in the name of the club they support. Having already landed partnerships with some big names in the Premier League such as Liverpool and Southampton, as well as many other clubs in the lower leagues, Planet League has already been able to attract a substantial number of 'competitors'.
The effect that sport has in engaging a huge audience of followers is well documented - look, for example, at Marcus Rashford's achievement of uniting the UK against child food poverty, or at direct club-based efforts such as The Chelsea Foundation. Hence, Planet League has a golden opportunity to build on an existing model and to unite more people against climate change.
Key to Planet League's success will be building more partnerships with clubs and generating positive press - the bigger the supporter base it can establish, the better the League will perform and the greater its impact on the environment will be.
